Introduction
This summer Adidas fired the first shots for the new season as the much publicized release and promotion of the adiZero™ Crazy Light put the company at the forefront of the basketball shoe industry. With all the dust settled, the 2011-2012 Adidas line up is here for the fall, including signature releases for Derrick Rose (adiZero™ Rose 2.0) and Dwight Howard (adiPower Howard), featuring a new platform based around light weight performance and a redesigned foundation (mirroring the Puremotion introduction a couple years back). Taking the place of the adiZero™ Infiltrate from last seasons line up is the subject of this First Look – the adiZero™ Ghost.
One of the marquee models in the 2011-2012 Adidas line up, the adiZero™ Ghost follows the mold of the adiZero™ Crazy Light and upcoming adiZero™ Rose 2.0. The features include the following:
Leather and light weight air mesh upper
Welded Sprint Web frame on the lateral side
Midfoot TORSION® SYSTEM plate
Light weight PU insole for durable comfort
Contoured non-marking rubber outsole
Aesthetics and Styling
Stylistically, first impressions of the adiZero™ Ghost lead to comparisons to the adiZero™ Crazy Light. With a Sprint Web and open mesh construction, as well as the three stripe logo blazed across, the Ghost is a beefed up version of the lightest basketball shoe ever made. Other performance features include the contoured outsole, which is standard for Adidas basketball this season, as well as the large TORSION® SYSTEM plate at the midfoot and patent leather portions at the toe box, heel, and tongue. Whenever the 2011-2012 NBA season comes in full swing, the Ghost is sure to stand out on the court.

The sleek flowing lines of the Ghost run through the sides of the high mid cut outline. Sprint Web with open mesh cut outs give the shoe a sense of speed, as the Adidas three stripe logo is prominently featured. Our first look begins with the lower half construction where the 2011-2012 S-shaped outsole, with a molded midsole & TORSION® SYSTEM plate is again present (used also for the Pro Model Zero and Stupidly Light). Horizontal flex grooves mark the forefoot and small midfoot area, with a deep curved vertical groove running though the forefoot & heel. The outsole is molded with a wave like pattern, which is present throughout. A slight forefoot outrigger is present on the lateral side. Supporting the outsole is a molded, layered midsole, cut with segments at the midfoot and textured with a fine diamond shaped pattern. To complete the foundation, the large shiny TORSION® SYSTEM plate brings optimum stability.
Shinning through, the thin patent leather toe box is marked with trapezoidal and triangular shaped sections, giving a futuristic spaceship like look. The four center portions are punctured with perforation holes with an Adidas logo sitting at the throat line. Cut off on the sides, the Sprint Web and leather side pieces are stitched on top of the toe box, right before the forefoot is met. Both sides are symmetrical, differing in the material used. First, each side is marked with four air mesh sections, extending from the forefoot to midfoot. The open sections follow the flowing lines, as the Adidas three strip logo is met towards the collar. Leather is used for added support on the medial side, while the Sprint Web on the lateral carries the signature white outline and neon “adizero” logo.

Much like the toe box, the stitched heel counter is made with the shiny patent leather with four perforated sections. The counter rises and slopes diagonally, carrying the flowing theme, with a large white Adidas logo added in the center. Above the counter is a small outside Achilles lobe, which is soft to the touch and integrates seamlessly with the leather and Sprintweb sides which make up the collar. The top sides of the collar are cut with a triangular open air portion, backed with mesh. Padding is thick throughout the collar, without having a bulky look or feel, while the lining comes in the form of a textured synthetic.
Five eyelets punctured through the Sprint Web and leather sides run straight up to the final three metal reinforce eyelets on the collar. The shoe is fitted with thin oval laces, which fit in perfectly with the overall design of the shoe. For the tongue, a nylon web covers the padding base, which has triangular cut outs for weight reduction and is lined with the textured synthetic found on the collar. The final patent leather portion covers the top of the tongue, where a lace holder and Adidas logo are observed. Rounding out the adiZero Ghost is a thin light weight PU insole, appropriately branded with the “adizero” logo.
A First Look
What could be a premier shoe on the court, the adiZero™ Ghost brings high expectations with performance. Aesthetically sleek with flowing lines, the Ghost is placed right up the adiZero™ Crazy Light and upcoming adiZero™ Rose 2.0. And with the performance aspects centered around the new outsole construction & light weight balance, all indications point to Adidas having crafted another solid and versatile performer. Next month, our blitz of Adidas 2011-2012 Performance Reviews will include the adiZero™ Ghost, as well as the Stupidly Light and much anticipated adiZero™ Rose 2.0.
