Introduction
Evaluating strictly performance, the Adidas 2010-2011 catalog, with both the adiZero™ Rose and Rose 1.5, stands at the top of the basketball shoe industry. This exceptional performance can mainly be attributed to the Puremotion technology, which provides some of the best court feel on the market (among other attributes). For the new season, change in technology is in the cards, with the introduction of the adiZero™ Crazy Light this past June. It is only fitting that our first Performance Review (Crazy Light aside) for the new Adidas line up is an updated of the company staple – the Pro Model Zero.
Carrying the legacy of Adidas Basketball, the Pro Model Zero updates the franchise standard to fit the season line up. The features include the following:
Synthetic leather upper
Signature Adidas shell toe in the form of lightweight Kurim shell toe
Contoured non-marking rubber outsole (similar to the Adidas adiZero™ Crazy Light)
Molded EVA midsole
TORSION® SYSTEM at the midfoot
Aesthetics and Styling
The designers at Adidas have done an excellent job in evolving the Pro Model line to fit the standards of the current market, and the Zero is no exception. In the past, the Pro Model has taken the shape of the classic Superstar, in a high cut look. This year, the Zero has been molded in a more current basketball sense, following the light weight trend of the market. Adidas has also poured more of their signature technology into the shoe with the TORSION® SYSTEM and the contoured outsole. Of course no Adidas shoe can be dubbed a “Pro Model” without the signature shell toe box, this time made up of a light weight rubber.
Keeping the Pro Model style in line, the Zero has the standard mid cut shape from the sides. Weight has been shed on the upper as the patent leather overlay is cut with portions for ventilation and flexibility. But the shoe is not without style and curves as the outsole is observed. Here, the S-shaped rubber sole sits, marked with a deep cut wave pattern. At the forefoot, a vertical flex groove joins two horizontal cuts creating 5 segments. Circular cuts, which flare out, mark the medial side. Interestingly, slight outriggers are formed on each side of this round area. Next, the small midfoot portion is also marked with four horizontal flex grooves, reaching the heel area where a lone groove is cut vertically and a white Adidas logo is found. Around the outsole is the white molded midsole. The diamond textured foam is given a stacked style, with vertical cuts around the midfoot area. Here, the large shiny black “TORSION SYSTEM” plate connects the bottom half to the upper. Rounding the midsole is a shiny black layer, matching the midfoot plate, at the heel and forefoot.
The signature aesthetic feature of each Pro Model iteration is the shell toe. For the Zero, the traditional thick rubber Adidas shell toe has been replaced by a light weight Kurim toe box. Shaped much like a ventilation grate, the toe box is more flexible than the rigid rubber of past models. Stitched on the sides is patent leather overlay. Done in a cracked pattern, the overlay is stitched on to the symmetrical sides. At the forefoot area, a small triangular portion is cut with circular ventilation holes, while the collar area reveals a perforated mesh underlay. The three strip logo comes in the form of shiny rubber pieces, outlined in silver.
Shiny patent leather makes up the heel counter, which has a small perforated section in the middle. The simple counter has an Adidas logo in the center with a black marking strip over the perforated section. Above the patent leather is a small black brushed synthetic area, which adds a nice style touch to back end. Moving up, the collar has a standard shape and is lined with a textured felt-like synthetic, with memory foam like padding.
A total of 8 eyelets (6 cut into the patent leather upper, and 2 on the collar) house the standard oval laces. The tongue is made up of a soft padded material, with cut outs throughout the sides and top. Covering the padded material is a nylon layer, extending through the patent leather piece at the top. A small lace holder, with the three stripe logo, is connected to the patent leather, which has the “PRO MODEL 0” branding. Finally, the inside lining of the tongue shows off the felt synthetic, which also makes up the thin “Adidas” branded PU insole.
Comfort and Fit
Before getting into the Pro Model Zero, it is advised that a generous loosening off the laces be done initially. Once inside, the shoe has a glove like fit, as the pressure is mostly felt from the sides and almost seems as though there is a large strap covering the middle of the shoe. Because of the outsole shape, the medial side feels as though it is floating giving excellent support for the arch, while the forefoot lateral side feels tight. Thankfully, the lining is soft and the leather is on the thin side, negating any real discomfort. Fit is true to size and snug. At the toe area, there is some room for movement, and the Kurim shell has an easy feel. Likewise, the ankle area is comfortably protected, as the collar and tongue have a very non-intrusive grip. The Achilles completely covered, heel lock down is excellent, with little to no movement. Below, cushioning is firm and hard, but since there is great arch support, the foot does not sit flat. However, those who need or require a soft bed may want to look elsewhere. In summary, the Zero has a snug, firm, and contoured fit.
